Grammy-winning audio engineer Jimmy Nutt grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana. He learned to play drums and guitar at age 12 and soon after began playing in a band with his best friend, James LeBlanc. After graduating from high school, he moved to Texas to continue his musical journey. He played regularly at clubs in both Dallas and Austin.

In July of 2000, Nutt moved with his wife and son to Muscle Shoals following several visits to the area. He quickly made a name for himself as a recording engineer at FAME Studios and signed a publishing deal as a songwriter with House of Fame Publishing. Eventually, he struck out on his own, launching the state-of-the-art NuttHouse Recording Studio in downtown Sheffield in 2008.

Located in a repurposed bank building built in 1955, the NuttHouse offers “tracking, overdubbing and mixing services,” as well as “an outstanding selection of recording equipment, instruments and amps,” including a Trident console, Yamaha grand piano, and Hammond organ with a Leslie speaker cabinet.

Nutt received his first Grammy award in 2016 for his work on The SteelDrivers' The Muscle Shoals Recordings, which was also named Bluegrass Album of the Year. Four years later, he received a Juno award from the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for production and mixing of The Dead South's album Sugar and Joy.

Other artists with whom Nutt has worked include Percy Sledge, Clarence Carter, Jimmy Buffett, Mac McAnally, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, John Paul White, Donna Jean Godchaux, Lenny LeBlanc, Heartland, Russell Smith, Drive-By Truckers, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, The Decoys (Scott Boyer, David Hood, Kelvin Holly, N.C. Thurman and Mike Dillon), Spooner Oldham and Donnie Fritts.

Jimmy is a member of the Muscle Shoals Music Association and teaches recording at the University of North Alabama as an adjunct professor.
