This event, begun in 1967, builds on a tradition of local fiddlers’ contests that began in Limestone County in 1924 and is credited with helping revive the tradition of competition in old-time music. More than 15,000 people from across the country attend each year to enjoy the festivities. Some 200 contestants compete for top prize money in 18 different categories, including several fiddle and guitar categories, harmonica, mandolin, bluegrass banjo, dulcimer, old-time singing, banjo and buck dancing. The convention culminates in a “fiddle-off” between the top two fiddlers. The winning fiddler is declared “Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddle Champion” and takes home a trophy and cash prize. In addition to the musical competition, hundreds of musicians will participate in numerous jam sessions conducted across the university’s campus. The event also includes more than 150 arts and crafts booths featuring many handmade pieces. The event has been named a “Top 20 Event” by the Southeast Tourism Association three times.
